1 1/2 pounds ground beef

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 jar spaghetti sauce

1/3 cup water

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon sugar

1/4 teaspoon pepper

8 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced

8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese

Brown beef and onions. add remaining ingredients except the potatoes and cheese and simmer 5 minutes. Spoon 1/3 of the meat mixture into a greased 9 by 13-inch baking dish. Layer 1/2 of the potatoes over the meat, add a layer of 1/3 of the meat, then the rest of the potatoes. Top potatoes with remaining meat mixture. Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 1 hour. Remove foil and sprinkle cheese on top. Bake 10 minutes more. Let casserole stand for 10 minutes before serving.
