2 cups sugar

1/2 cup butter, room temperature

2 eggs

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

3 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon salt

4 cups apples, peeled and diced

1 cup chopped nuts

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup half and half

1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream sugar and 1/2 cup butter; add eggs. Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. Fold in apples and nuts and pour into a greased 9 by13-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes; then reduce heat to 300 degrees and bake for 45 minutes. While cake is baking, combine 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup butter and half and half in a saucepan and cook over low heat stirring constantly until  mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of the spoon. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Serve cake with warm sauce. You may want to double to sauce recipe!
