Being part of a cooperative means being part of something special. That’s why Iowa’s electric co-ops are celebrating National Cooperative Month in October, along with 29,000 other cooperative businesses serving more than 350 million people who belong to one or more co-ops across the U.S.

“Cooperatives Build” is the theme of this year’s National Cooperative Month. It reflects the fact that there are so many ways cooperatives help build a stronger rural America, such as giving members a voice in their cooperative’s policies and returning margins to members in the form of capital credits; generating jobs in their communities, keeping profits local and paying local taxes to help support community services; and getting involved in local organizations, charitable groups and schools.
